 হিন্দুধর্মের বিশ্বাস অনুযায়ী মহালয়া তিথিতে যারা পিতৃ মাতৃহীন তারা তাদের পূর্ব পুরুষের আত্মার শান্তি কামনা করে অঞ্জলি প্রদান করেন যাতে পূর্ব পরুষরা স্বর্গে গিয়ে ঈশ্বরে বিলীন হয়ে যায়।

  ত্রেতা যুগে  শ্রী রামচন্দ্র রাবণকে বধ করে সীতা  কে উদ্ধার করার জন্য অকালে আদ্যাশক্তির আরাধনা করেছিলেন। তিনি অকালে দেবীর পূজা করেছিলেন বলে এই শরতে দেবী দুর্গার পূজা কে দেবীর অকাল-বোধন বলা হয়।

মহালয়ায় পিতৃ পক্ষের শেষ ও দেবী পক্ষের সূচনা হয়। মহালয়ার দিন দেবী পক্ষের সূচনার মধ্য দিয়ে জগতের সকল অশুভ ও আসুরিক শক্তি নিধনের জন্য সর্ব শক্তির অধিকারী জগৎজননী মহামায়ার  আহ্বান করা হয় শঙ্খের ধ্বনি ও চণ্ডীপাঠের মধ্য দিয়ে।

   মহালয়া শব্দটা শুনতেই চোখের সামনে ভেসে আসে অসংখ্য স্মৃতি। আশ্বিনের শারদ প্রাতে মহালয়ার দিন রেডিও তে বীরেন্দ্র কৃষ্ণ ভদ্রের কণ্ঠে ভেসে আসা মহালয়ার গান শুনে ঘুম থেকে উঠা, আকাশে বাতাসে শিউলি ফুলের গন্ধ, দরজা খুলে উঠোনের দিকে চোখ যেতে না যেতেই সারা উঠোন জুড়ে শিউলি ফুল, বাড়ির পাশ দিয়ে বয়ে যাওয়া ছুটো নদীর দুপাশে কাশ ফুলের বন, নীল আকাশে ভেসে যাওয়া পেঁজা তুলার মত মেঘ। বাড়ি থেকে একটু দুরে বাজারে, মাঠে প্যান্ডেলের আয়োজন। কি অপূর্বই না ছিল সেই দিন গুলো ভাবলেই মনটা যেন আনন্দে ভরে উঠে।

       কিন্তু আজ নেই নীল আকাশে ভেসে আসা সেই তুলার মত সাদা ধবধবে মেঘ, নেই সেই কাশ ফুলের বন চারদিকে শুধু কংক্রিটের দালান। তাও মহালয়ার সকালে চণ্ডীপাঠের ধ্বনি কানে এলে মনটা যেন আনন্দে ভরে উঠে। চারদিকে সাজো সাজো রব উঠে। চলে পূজার শেষ কেনাকাটা, প্যান্ডেল হপিং এর পরিকল্পনা। 

  তবে বলা বাহুল্য করোনা আতঙ্কে এ  বছর হয়ত অন্যান্য বছরের মত সেই আনন্দটা ও অসম্পূর্ণ থেকে যাবে। হয়ত ফেইসবুক ও টুইটার এর ঘেরা টোপে আবদ্ধ হয়ে থাকবে। কিন্তু মহালয়ার গান শুনে আজ ও মনে যেন আশা জাগে মা দুর্গা আজ পৃথিবীতে এসে আমাদের সমস্ত অশুভ ও আসুরিক শক্তিকে নাশ করে আমাদের এক রোগমুক্ত সুন্দর পৃথিবী উপহার দেবেন।

                       

                            

English Translation:-

According to Hindu mythology, on the day of Mahalaya, those whose parents have departed the Earth, pray for their predecessors's souls so that their predecessors may go to heaven.

In the age of Treta, Lord Rama killed Ravana and worshiped Adisakti to save Sita. The worship of Goddess Durga in this time of autumn season is called Akal-Bodhan.

Mahamaya, the possessor of all power, is called upon to destroy all the evil and demonic forces of the world. On the day of Mahalaya, goddess Mahamaya is called through the sound of conch shells.

Hearing the word mahalaya, innumerable memories come to mind.I remember on the day of Mahalaya, I woke up to hear the chant of Virendra Krishna Bhadra on the radio, the smell of hyacinth flowers in the air, clouds like cotton wool floating in the blue sky, arranging pandals in the market, a little away from home. What a wonderful day it was.

But today there is no cotton like cloud floating in the blue sky, just skyscrapers around us. Even in the morning when the sound of Chandipath is heard, the mind seems to be filled with joy. There was a happiness all around. The last minute shopping of the puja days is going on and the plan of pandal hopping.

Needless to say, this year, like other years, the joy will remain incomplete in fear of Corona virus. Maybe we will be trapped in Facebook and Twitter. I hope that Mother Durga will come to earth today and destroy all our evil and demonic forces and give us a beautiful world free from disease.
