          চিঠি  হল একজন থেকে আরেকজনকে লেখা একটি পত্র ধারক বার্তা যা দুই পক্ষের মধ্যে যোগাযোগ বজায় রাখে।  চিঠি  শব্দটি খুব ছোট হলেও একসময় চিঠিই ছিল যোগাযোগের মাধ্যম হিসেবে অতি জনপ্রিয়। যার মধ্যে লুকিয়ে থাকত বিচিত্র সুখ ও দুঃখের  অনুভূতি,কত আবেগ জড়িত স্মৃৃৃতি , বহু আনন্দের হাতছানি, কখনো বা নিজের একান্ত আপন বিষাদকথন।

       কিন্তু আজকাল কেউ কাউকে হাতে আর চিঠি লেখে না। প্রযুক্তির যুগে যেন হারিয়ে গেছে আমাদের সেই গভীর অনুভূতির সেই চিঠি। একটা সময় ছিল যখন চিঠিই ছিল দূরের মানুষের সাথে যোগাযোগের একমাত্র মাধ্যম। প্রিয় মানুষের লেখা চিঠি বার বার পড়ার পর ও সযত্নে তুলে রাখা হত। চিঠির প্রত্যেক শব্দের মধ্যে যেন লুকিয়ে থাকত প্রিয় মানুষটির ভালবাসার ছোঁয়া। এই চিঠি নিয়ে কবি, সাহিত্যিকরা কত না কবিতা, গান ও গল্প লিখেগেছেন। বিশ্বকবি রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের লেখা ছোট গপ্ল ''স্ত্রীর পত্র", সুকান্ত ভট্টাচার্যের বিখ্যাত কবিতা "রানার", কবি কাজী নজরুল ইসলামের তার স্ত্রী নার্গিসকে লেখা চিঠি পড়লে বোঝা যায় চিঠি কত আবেগময়, জীবন্ত হতে পারে। আমাদের মধ্যে এই চিঠি নিয়ে যে মধুর অনুভূতি লুকিয়ে আছে , আধুনিক যুগে আমাদের নূতন প্রজন্মের কাছে সেই  অনুভূতি একেবারেই মূল্যহীন। আজ হারিয়ে গেছে প্রিয়জনকে কাগজে নিজের হাতে লেখা চিঠির যুগ। ডাক বিভাগে আজ নেই সেই আগের মত ব্যস্ততা। নেেই সেই আগের মত আবেগ বাড়ির দরজার সামনে সাইলেকের বেল বাজলেই ডাকপিয়নের চিঠি এসেছে বোঝে প্রিয়জনের চিঠির উদ্দেশ্যে ছুটে আসা। ছোট বেলার সাইলেকের বেলের শব্দের কথা মনে পরলেই মনে পড়ে যায় --

       রানার ছুটেছে তাই ঝুম ঝুম ঘণ্টা বাজছে রাতে/রানার চলেছে, খবরের বোঝা হাতে,/রানার চলেছে রানার!

          কবি সুকান্ত ভট্টাচার্যের কবিতার সেই রানারের দেখা মেলে না আজ এই প্রযুক্তির  যুগে। 

  প্রাচীন কাল থেকেই মানুষ যোগাযোগের মাধ্যম হিসেবে এই চিঠির আদান প্রদান করত তা বিভিন্ন পৌরাণিক গ্রন্থ এর মাধ্যমে আমরা জানতে পারি। ১৫৫৫ খ্রিস্টাব্দে কোচবিহারের রাজা নরনারায়ণের অহোমরাজ স্বর্গনারায়ণকে লেখা চিঠি আজ পর্যন্ত বাংলা ভাষার আদি পত্র। তবে প্রাচীন কালে অনেক ক্ষেত্রেই চিঠি বাহক হিসেবে বিভেন্ন পাখি যেমন বাজপাখি, ও পায়রার ব্যবহার করা হত। 

           আজ হাতে লেখা চিঠির জায়গা দখল করে নিয়েছে ইমেইল, মোবাইল কিংবা এস.এম.এস.। একসময় যে আবেগ কিংবা প্রয়োজনের তাগিদ মানুষকে মিষ্টি মধুর অক্ষরে চিঠি লেখতে অনুপ্রাণিত করতো, আজ প্রযুক্তির চরম উন্নতি আর নাগরিক জীবনের ব্যস্ততায় চিঠি লেখবার সেই আবেগটি যেন হারিয়ে গেছে, ব্যস্ত মানুষ আজ বেছে নিয়েছে আধুনিক প্রযুক্তিকে।কিন্তু হাতে লেখা একটি চিঠি যেভাবে মানুষের আবেগ অনুভূতি প্রাপককে ছুঁয়ে দেয় ইমেল, কিংবা এস.এম.এস কি তা পারে। 

       চিঠির মতো ইমেইলে বা এস.এম.এস. এ সেই অনুভূতি না থাকলেও দ্রুততম যোগাযোগ ব্যবস্থা হিসেবে এটি বর্তমানে খুব জনপ্রিয়। পৃথিবীর যে-কোনো প্রান্ত থেকে মানুষ খুব কম সময়ে পাঠিয়ে দিতে পারে জরুরী তথ্য কিংবা নিজের আবেগ। আমরা যারা শহর বা দেশের বাইরে নিজেদের আপনজনের কাছ থেকে অনেক দূরে থাকি আজ মোবাইলের মাধ্যমে সেকেন্ডে যুক্ত হতে পারি সেই প্রিয় মানুষগুলোর সাথে। 

     আধুনিক প্রযুক্তির যুগে হয়ত একদিন এই ইমেইলের বা এস.এম.এস.এর জায়গা অন্য কোন প্রযুক্তি দখল করবে যেমন আজ চিঠির জায়গা দখল করে নিয়েছে এই এমেইল বা এস.এম.এস। হয়ত কোন একদিন চিঠি যেমন আজ ইতিহাসের পাতায় স্থান করে নিয়েছে তেমনি ইমেইল ও সেই জায়গা দখল করে নেবে। 

                            তবে আজ ও পৃথিবীর বহু ভাষায় চিঠি একটা বিশেষ স্থান দখল করে আছে। 

     চিঠি নিয়ে আমার নিজের কিছু স্মৃতি- তখন আমি দ্বিতীয় শ্রেণিতে পড়ি। তখন শতরূপা, বৈশাখী, ঈশিতা, তনুশ্রী ওরা  ছিল আমার খুব ভাল বান্ধবী। আমি ছুটিতে দেশের বাড়িতে গেছিলাম তখন তনুশ্রীর বাবা হঠাৎ অন্য জায়গায় বদলী হয়ে যায়। সে তার মাকে নিয়ে আমাদের সাথে দেখা করতে এসেছিল কিন্তু দেখা হল না। তাই তনুশ্রী নূতন জায়গায় গিয়ে আমাকে সেখান থেকে চিঠি পাঠিয়েছিল। বহু যত্নে সেই চিঠি আমি আমার কাছে বহুদিন রেখেছিলাম। সেই ছিল আমার জীবনে পাওয়া প্রথম চিঠি। জীবনে শেষ চিঠি লিখেছিলাম আমার এক বান্ধবী রেশমিকে।তখন আমি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে পড়ি। আমি তখন হোস্টেলে থাকতাম। তাই রেশমি ও আমি ভিন্ন শহরে ছিলাম, তাই হোস্টেলে যখন ছুটির দিনে একা বসে থাকতাম তখন রেশমিকে চিঠি লিখতাম। রেশমি ও আমাকে চিঠি লিখত। তার চিঠি পেলে মনে হত সে যেন আমার কাছেই আছে। তখন মনটা ও ভাল হয়ে যেত। এই হয়ত চিঠির যুগের শেষ তারপর চলে এল মোবাইল।

    A letter is a writing source of conversation between two person.It is usually put in an envelope and delivered by post. Although the word letter is very short, at once letter was very popular as a means of communication. In which were hidden various feelings of happiness and sorrow, memories of how many emotions were involved.Letter writing has played a role in the reproduction of writing as an art throughout history.

    But nowadays no one writes a letter by hand. That letter of our deepest feelings seems to have been lost in the age of technology. There was a time when letters were the only means of communication with distant people. Letters written by loved ones were carefully read and kept. In every word of the letter was hidden the touch of love of the beloved man or woman. Poets and writers have written many poems, songs and stories with this letter. Reading the short story "Strir Patra" written by world poet Rabindranath Tagore, Sukant Bhattacharya's famous poem "Runner", letter written by poet Kazi Nazrul Islam to his wife Nargis, one can understand how emotional and lively the letter can be.

         We know that people used to exchange this letter as a means of communication from ancient times through various mythological texts. In ancient times, however, many birds, such as hawks and pigeons, were used as letter carriers.

         But in this modern age, that feeling is absolutely priceless to our new generation. Today, the era of handwritten letters to loved ones is lost. The postal department is no longer as busy as it used to be.Earlier, as soon as the bell of a cycle rang in front of the door of the house, we understand that postman arrived with letter. When I think of the sound of the bell of cycle, I remember the song 

       Ranar chuteche tai jhum jhum ghonta bajche rate/ Ranar coleche, khoborer bojha hate, Raran cleche ranar!

        Today, email, mobile or SMS have taken the place of handwritten letters. The passion that once inspired people to write letters in sweet words, but today the passion for writing letters seems to be lost in the extreme advancement of technology and the busyness of civic life, busy people today have chosen modern technology. But the way a handwritten letter touches the recipient of a person's emotional feelings, but email or SMS can not.

 

        Although Email or SMS like letter does not have that feeling, it is now very popular as the fastest communication system. People from all over the world can send important information or their emotions in a very short time. Today we can connect with our loved ones who are far away from our loved ones in the city or country.

   In the age of modern technology, maybe one day this email or SMS will be replaced by some other technology like today this email or SMS has taken the place of letter. Maybe one day a letter will take the place of history and email will take its place.

                          

                   Today, however, letters occupy a special place in many languages of the world.

          Some of my own memories about the letter - then I read in second grade. At that time Satarupa, Baishakhi, Ishita, Tanusree were my very good friends. When I went home on holiday, Tanushree's father suddenly transferred to another place. she came to visit us with his mother but did not meet with us. So Tanusree went to the new place and sent me a letter from there. I kept that letter with great care for a long time. That was the first letter I ever received. I wrote the last letter in my life to one of my friends Reshmi. Then I went to university. I lived in a hostel then. So Reshmi and I were in different cities, so I used to write letters to Reshmi when I was sitting alone in the hostel on holidays. Reshmi used to write letters to me. When I received his letter, it seemed that she was with me. Then the mind would be better. This is probably the end of the letter era then came mobile.
